3 walls are left standing

Week 2

During this past week MMHG has totally removed the second floor including the flooring and the floor joists. All the main floor framing, sheet rock, and any remaining window was also removed.

It was slow going taking those floor joists apart as the goal was remove them lightly so that we could re-use those 2x6’s. Our pile of re-usable material just keeps growing and growing. How great! These old ruff sawn 2x’s will look great as trim moldings or cabinet facings and some of them will be re-used as framing material as well.

After the flooring was removed it was time to start disassembling the main floor’s bathroom, two bedrooms, and all the remaining main floor windows. Daniel Beaudin, that’s right, tight end for the griz, was in charge of taking down the bathroom and the ceilings. At 250 pounds it was comical watching Daniel remove the cast iron bathtub from the house with only one arm. Oh, to be a kid again. Anyway the main floor was an easy task as most of it was sweeping the old sheet rock material into a pile to be ground up by Construction Site Services. With the above floor joists already removed it was a cinch taking down the main floor’s framework. Again, that 2x pile just keeps on going!

salvaged stained glass windows

As for the windows on the main floor, MMHG really scored big time, as there were two old leaded stained glass windows that were in excellent condition. MMHG plans on re-using those windows in this remodel. Those windows will be a great accent to this historic, year 1925 home. What a great find!

This week also included taking down the front porch and the back end addition that was assembled so poorly. Not only were all of the front porch’s posts rotten at the base from moisture, but they were only just sitting on the decking. With this in mind the MMHG crew stabilized the front wall framing and proceeded to sledge hammer the posts out from under the porch roof. With the last post standing, the crew gathered, and Daniel grabbed that sledge, swung with force at that last post and everyone scrambled out of the way. Crack! That old front porch roof didn’t know what was coming. As for the crew, it was an easy demo and the MMHG crew proceeded to clean and organize the material from that porch that was so violently taken apart.

The back addition was a nightmare to disassemble. There were two sets of hardwood flooring underneath two layers of linoleum. The walls were layered with sheeting both inside and out. The inside walls had plaster under the sheet rock which was all over the top of another layer of sheeting. What a nightmare! Not only were there layers everywhere but there was also some wood paneling over all of this rubbish in the front half of the addition. Wow! Despite this the MMHG crew held there upbeat spirits and took the walls down without a complaint. What a bunch of troopers.

So the Second floor is now gone. What lies ahead, no one knows. No wait, next week is totally lined out. MMHG will remove all the contents from the basement, remove the foundation from the addition and excavate the new foundations for the addition and the two-car garage. If there is time the foundations will be poured and the week after next the framing will begin with John Freer from Riverworks. Thanks John!

Stay tuned as this wonderful project continues to impress us all!
