The film crew meets with Adam, our landscaper, to find out what makes our yard “green”.
Week 15
This beautiful MMHG reconstruction project has been sided and looks like a house once more (at least on the outside). We held a public demonstration last Saturday that had one of our biggest turnouts.
Week 15 was spent hanging siding on the home. The MMHG crew decided to use three different materials for the siding. For the main floor we used one-inch foam stucco material—which added another 5 points of R value to our main floor. As you may remember, 3 of the original main floor exterior walls were retained. These walls were framed using the old 2x4’s which are actually 2 inches by 4 inches, unlike the 2x4’s we buy today that are all a half an inch smaller than that on both sides. With these narrow walls, we installed a high-performance iso poly rigid foam board for insulation on the inside. Now, with the 1-inch foam on the extieior walls as well, we have attained our desired R value of at least 25. To the MMHG crew, having a well insulated, tight home is one of the more important criterium for achieving the “Green” label.
Sustainable wood has been used to trim out the windows.
The other two siding materials we have used are board and bat and hardi board lap siding. We ordered 8 inch hardi board which we ripped in half. We did this to obtain the old-fashioned look and maintain the charm of this remodeled 1925 home. Ripping the hardi board was very tedious, but made this Green home shine like a star.
The MMHG crew also spent week 15 installing the flooring. We decided to use Larch flooring provided by Northslope Sustainable Wood, LLC. These floors are gorgeous and were manufactured from sustainably-harvested wood. Northslope hand picks the timber they use for flooring—leaving all robust, healthy trees. Northslope prides themselves not only on their flooring but also on their dedication to restoring unhealthy forests.
The MMHG floors look great next to our beautiful cabinets.
Over the past week we have also seen a lot of Dan Two-Feathers of Horizon Finishes. Dan has started putting in the concrete floors in the kitchen and two bathrooms as well as putting in the shower surrounds. We are extremely excited to see dan’s beautiful work unfold on our MMHG project.
The MMHG program is well on its way to completion. Over the next couple of weeks we will finish all of the flooring, concrete and tile work. Start hanging doors and trim, as well as tidying up the exterior of the home including landscaping from Sticks and Stones. We will host our final public demonstration and Gala Extravaganza on Friday, September 7th from 3 - 8 pm at 646 Longstaff. Enjoy live radio from the Trail 103.3 from 3-6 PM followed by Shane Clouse of Stomping Ground from 6 PM on.
