Zonal pricing could significantly impact energy bills across the country - here's what you need to know.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is reportedly considering plans to introduce regional pricing for power – a change that could significantly impact energy bills across the country.
The proposed "zonal pricing" scheme aims to reflect the actual costs of producing and distributing electricity in different parts of the country. Essentially, zonal pricing would mean that areas generating more energy would benefit from lower electricity bills. Mimicking a form of regional pricing used in countries like Australia, Italy and Sweden, it would be the biggest reform of the power market since the 1990s privatisation.
The scheme would benefit areas with high renewable energy generation, but could mean higher bills for residents of other parts of the UK. For example, residents of Scotland would enjoy lower energy prices due to the country’s abundant wind power capacity. At the same time, households in the south of England, where less energy is produced, may be faced with higher prices than before.
Critics have said that zonal pricing would unfairly raise prices for households already struggling with high energy costs, and that any new government scheme should be designed to bring down bills across the board. Ahead of an international energy summit, Miliband emphasized that "no decision has been made" regarding zonal pricing, and noted there are two options currently under consideration: zonal pricing and reformed national pricing.
As these policy discussions evolve, one thing remains clear: investing in solar helps you protect yourself from changing energy pricing models. Whether the government ultimately adopts zonal pricing or reforms the current national system, generating your own clean electricity offers long-term stability and cost savings.
